Most People Should Aim for a Cholesterol Level Below 200mg / dL. Here’s How:

The Mayo Clinic states that most people should aim for a total cholesterol level below 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Your “bad” cholesterol, called low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, should be even lower—at 100mg/dL or less. If you’re considered to be at a high risk for heart attack or stroke, it’s time to bring your cholesterol numbers down.

When [natural methods] and lifestyle changes aren’t enough, your doctor may suggest statins. These medications work to reduce your cholesterol by blocking the substances your body uses to make it. This, in turn, reduces your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Everyone experiences different results, but statins can reduce your bad cholesterol by up to 50%. The benefits don’t stop there, since they’re also shown to increase your good cholesterol, or HDL, by up to 15%.
