About CoQ10

What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme CoQ10 (or CoQ10 for short) is a naturally occurring nutrient-like coenzyme that plays an important role in the production of 95% of the energy used by our organs, and no other organ needs more energy than our hearts. Unfortunately, our CoQ10 levels may drop due to age, stress, and cholesterol-lowering statin drug therapy. Taking a CoQ10 supplement is the best way to increase your CoQ10 levels.

What is the difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol?

Ubiquinol and ubiquinone are two forms of CoQ10. Ubiquinol is the active form of CoQ10 and is used in the production of cellular energy. Your body utilizes both forms of CoQ10 and is constantly converting between ubiquinone and ubiquinol depending on its current need.

What are the benefits of CoQ10?

  • CoQ10 provides a range of health benefits, including but not limited to:
  • Support of heart and vascular health
  • Powerful antioxidant
  • Promotion of healthy blood pressure levels already within normal limits
  • Providing benefits to statin drug users

    What makes CoQ10 levels decline?

Factors such as age, stress, and cholesterol-lowering statin drug therapy may cause CoQ10 levels to decline.

Click here to learn more about what makes CoQ10 levels decline.

Can I get enough CoQ10 from my diet?

We are generally unable to get the amounts of CoQ10 recommended by some researchers from diet alone. Even if we include a lot of CoQ10 food sources such as liver and organ meats, it would be almost impossible to reach the levels suggested to support cardiovascular health.

Those with lower levels of CoQ10 due to age, stress, and statin use may also be unable to get enough CoQ10 in their diet to rebuild their levels. While including CoQ10-rich foods in our diets can help, adding a CoQ10 supplement to our regimen is the best way to ensure we are supporting our levels.

How can I boost my CoQ10 levels?

Our bodies produce CoQ10, but we may not be able to make enough to support optimal blood levels. Luckily, we can also get CoQ10 through our diet and from supplementation. When CoQ10 levels are diminished due to age, stress, or statin use, getting more CoQ10 from outside sources can help bring our levels back to normal.

Should those on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs take CoQ10?

Statin drugs can lower CoQ10 levels. In fact, studies show that CoQ10 levels can drop by up to 40% due to statin drug use! Low CoQ10 levels can be a concern because CoQ10 helps promote healthy heart function. This is because CoQ10 plays an important role in the production of 95% of the energy used by the cells in our body and no other organ uses more energy than our hearts.

The addition of a CoQ10 supplement to statin drug therapy can help rebuild CoQ10 levels. However, CoQ0 has poor absorption, therefore, you should choose one that is both water and fat-soluble which is better absorbed by the body than regular CoQ10. Please talk to your health care professional before taking any supplements, including CoQ10.

Should I take CoQ10 even if I am not on a statin?

As we age, our body’s normal CoQ10 levels will naturally drop. CoQ10 serum concentrations peak at 19-21 years of age and then begin to decline with levels dropping by up to 65% by age 80.

Other factors such as stress, diet and lifestyle can further diminish the amount of CoQ10 found in your body and all but eliminate the health benefits of this vital nutrient.

In addition, pharmaceuticals, such as cholesterol lowering statins, may also lower CoQ10 levels and further reduce potential health benefits. Therefore, whether or not you are on a statin, supplementing with CoQ10 can help restore the optimal levels that your body needs to support its healthy biological functions.

    Is there research on CoQ10?

Yes, CoQ10 has been used in a wide variety of research studies. You can read about the clinical applications of CoQ10 from the University of Maryland’s website.

We also provide links to CoQ10 research studies here.

What form of CoQ10 should I take?

If you are not truly absorbing your CoQ10 supplement, you may not be able to experience its potential benefits. Regular CoQ10, typically found in most powder-filled capsules and softgels, struggles with absorption because of its large molecule size and the fact that it often dissolves very poorly in fat and does not dissolve in water (such as the water-friendly environment found in our intestines).

This is why you should choose a CoQ10 supplement that is both water and fat-soluble, such as our Qunol CoQ10.

Click here to learn more about the importance of choosing a water and fat-soluble form of CoQ10.

What are the heart health benefits of CoQ10?

CoQ10 supports your cardiovascular system in two ways:

    • It plays a role in producing the energy needed by your heart
    • It helps protect your heart muscle from damaging molecules such as free radicals

CoQ10 can also help support blood pressure levels that are within normal ranges.

For more information on the benefits of CoQ10, please see our article here.

    Can CoQ10 help support fertility?

Research suggests that CoQ10 can help support fertility in both men and women. CoQ10 plays a vital role in the production of energy required by egg cells and may support their normal functions. Since CoQ10 levels decline starting at age 21 and can drop with aging, women may need to supplement with CoQ10 to help support their fertility. CoQ10 may also be necessary to support healthy sperm function because it is a powerful antioxidant.

You can find a summary of the research on CoQ10 and fertility here.

Can CoQ10 improve my skin health?

Studies have shown that taking a CoQ10 supplement can help decrease wrinkles and increase skin smoothness.

Just as the body ages, the skin ages too. In addition to the natural aging process, the skin is damaged by exposure to the sun’s UV rays, which provides a source of free radicals.

These free radicals can attack the cell’s DNA. CoQ10 is a naturally-occurring vitamin-like nutrient in the body that acts as a powerful antioxidant. It helps reduce free radical damage like that which occurs from UV rays. That is one reason why it is important to maintain adequate levels of antioxidants. As the body ages, the natural levels of antioxidants like CoQ10 decrease and taking a CoQ10 supplement can help replenish low levels.

Learn more about the research on CoQ10 for skin health here.

Will CoQ10 give me more energy?

No, you will not feel a boost of energy from taking CoQ10 like you would from a cup of coffee or an energy drink. CoQ10 plays a vital role in the production of cellular energy.

This is the energy your cells need to perform their normal functions.

Read more about the benefits of CoQ10 here!

    Does CoQ10 lower cholesterol?

CoQ10 does not lower cholesterol. However, cholesterol-lowering statin medications can lower our body’s natural CoQ10 levels and taking CoQ10 can help replenish low levels.

    Where is Qunol manufactured?

Qunol is manufactured in the United States.

I tried to dissolve my Qunol CoQ10 softgel in water but it did not dissolve. Why?

The Qunol CoQ10 water dissolution claim only applies to the contents of the capsule, not the capsule itself. The capsule is specially designed to pass through our stomach and dissolve in our intestines, releasing the contents into our intestines where they can be absorbed.

If you want to test the water solubility of the contents of a Qunol CoQ10 softgel capsule, you can try this experiment at home:

    1. Fill a clear glass with 8oz of warm water and 2 teaspoons of white vinegar
    2. Take a Qunol CoQ10 softgel and puncture it or cut off the very top with scissors
    3. Pour the contents of the Qunol softgel into the glass of water and stir with a spoon
    4. Feel free to repeat this experiment with other store bought brands of CoQ10 to see the difference! Since Qunol is the only water-soluble brand of CoQ10 available in stores, you will find that other brands form a clump and do not dissolve in water.

    Can I refrigerate Qunol Liquid?

Qunol Liquid is best when refrigerated, but you should not freeze it. You can keep it in the door of your refrigerator to prevent freezing.

Can I take Qunol after the expiration date?
